Scary part....

this is from friday, when driving from las vegas to san diego. many parts were through the desert, and we didnt see that many other cars. it was very windy. very windy! what you see here is sand!! at first it was kind of funny, all that sand blowing around. we first saw it from a distance, huge clouds of sand.... but suddenly we were in the middle of it. at one point we literally could not see anything anymore, like sudden heavy fog.... but then of sand. i was really scared! perhaps the scenery was beautiful, but we could see only a few meters, at most. i think i took this picture while driving, but we also got out of the car, because tim "wanted to expeience it". result; sand everywhere. the car got a fine layer too (on the inside), and even after a thorough shower i still feel not all the sand is gone.
but aside from the 2 or 3 times that the sand was taking literally all sight, it was pretty cool, and something i never experienced before!

Ugh, yes. Brings back memories of September 2009 when I awoke to find Sydney covered with a massive layer of fine red dust from way inland of the state. It was not nice to breathe and got into everything.

A big risk driving on that road in those conditions.

LOL, a very Dutch thing to just drive through a sandstorm and not wait it out.

but it makes a great photo :-)

Storms like this can sand off a car's finish and pit the windshield. If I got out into it I'd probably not stop talking and have sand in my teeth for hours.

well.... luckily it was not too busy on the road, and it was extremely windy the entire da... so i guess we would not have reached san diego while the sun was still shining...

the sandstorm was nothing more than a rainstorm would have been. Less dangerous in fact, because the sand does not obstruct the view, you don't need to use your wipers, and the road doesn't become slippery. And everybody (not just the Dutch) was just plowing through like it was nothing at all. the only reason i got out of the car was out of curiosity and it was interesting to stand in it.. if you don't mind getting sandblasted a bit, that is.

That looks scary when the sight has gone so sudden. Glad you managed without harm.
